Polycrystalline vs monocrystalline

What are Polycrystalline and Mono crystalline?

Poly-crystalline solar panels are made from silicon. Manufacturers melt many fragments of silicon together to form wafers for the panel. Poly-crystalline solar panels are called “multi-crystalline,” or many-crystal silicon.

To make solar cells for mono-crystalline solar panels, silicon is formed into bars and cut into wafers. These panels are called mono-crystalline, indicating that the silicon used is single-crystal silicon.

Which type of panels is more Efficient?

As poly crystalline panels have many crystals in each cell, there is less freedom for the electrons to move. As a result, they have lower efficiency ratings.

Whereas in monocrystalline, the cell is composed of a single crystal, the electrons that generate a flow of electricity have more room to move. As a result, they are more efficient than their poly-crystalline counterparts.

To increase it further there is another method used in manufacturing the panels which are called PERC.

Full-Form: Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell. 

Get Two Times Power Absorption with PERC Technology

In PERC cells, an additional layer is attached at the backside of the panel. Added layer works as a mirror. Reflected light hits panel second time. [Which doesn’t happen in Mono Crystalline]

That reflects the light that skipped through panel and provides a second opportunity to get absorbed by PV cells.

Why should one go for Mono Perc panels?

  • It has higher efficiency than traditional polycrystalline panels.
  • It occupies relatively less space.
  • As its efficiency is more, you can get your ROI earlier.

Here in above table, we have compared these two panels of same watt power. As we can see, there is a difference of almost 3% of efficiency on the same wattage capacity. That is a huge difference considering the efficiency of Ploy Crystalline.
